Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin: A Review

A review on the slasher/crime-thriller show Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin [2022]

My Rating:  ★★★★★

Girl stops at a motel, takes a shower, guy comes in, kills her, but I'm flipping it, and I need a guy who's not shy, confident in his own skin.

Pretty Little Liars:  Original Sin is a teen drama starring Bailey Maddison, Maia Reffico, Chandler Kinney, Malia Pyles and Zaria Simone. This show is fast paced  slasher, which is based off the 2011 show & book Pretty Little Liars. It is essentially a horror remake of the original Pretty Little Liars as it incorporates many staple features of the slasher sub-genre, such as a masked killer with a vendetta whilst also staying true to the teen drama element with things such as running for prom queen and dealing with mean girls.

The show follows 5 girls, similar to the original show: Imogen, Noa, Tabby, Minnie and Faran. They are all being tormented by an anonymous entity named A. This show follows the main characters as they try to uncover the mystery of what happened 20 years ago between their mothers, whilst also to figure out the problems in their own lives.

I enjoyed many aspects of this show, which was interesting considering the fact that I cannot handle jump scares at all, but they weren't extremely scary and they were done very tastefully unlike other horror shows/movies that throw in jump scares to distract from the plot. I also enjoyed the close relationship between the girls, as female friendship is not portrayed in media very often and even if we do see a friendship between women it is usually ruined by a man or not explored in any depth at all, however PLL: Original Sin managed to explored these relationships with nuance.

I also enjoyed how they handled the sexual assault storyline, many shows that talk about sexual assault/rape often use it as a motivation for the person who experienced it to become 'badass' and 'cool' but in PLL: Original Sin they showed the affects on the victim and how it affects their relationship, such as when [SPOILERS] Tabby tells Chip that she is unable to be around to be other men after what he did to her.

In Conclusion,  I really enjoyed this show as I was a fan of the original Pretty Little Liars. I also enjoyed the story telling and how it honoured it's predecessor without making it completely identical to the show and therefore creating it's own persona.
